Childhood obesity is reaching record heights across the globe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 41 million children were obese or overweight as of 2014.
 
Obesity is an all-too-familiar problem for parents, many of whom are aware of the long-term threat that childhood obesity poses to their sons and daughters. According to Let's Move!, an initiative launched by First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama that's dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity, obese kids are more likely to become obese as adults than youngsters who maintain healthy weights throughout their childhoods. In addition, obese children may be at greater risk for cardiovascular diseases such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

How to keep children of all ages safe

New and experienced parents alike must keep many things in mind when welcoming a child into their homes. Babies do not come with instruction manuals, but kids of all ages need their parents to perform various functions, including keeping them safe.
 
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says unintentional injuries, or those that result from burns, falls, poisoning, road traffic, and drowning, are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children in the United States. But even injuries that do not result in fatalities can still be serious. An estimated 9.2 million children per year visit hospital emergency rooms for unintentional injuries. For children 12 months old and younger, falls account for more than half of the nonfatal injuries.

How leukemia differs from other cancers

If asked to envision cancer, many people may automatically imagine tumors forming throughout the body through the uncontrolled growth of unhealthy cells. While that is a relatively accurate depiction of many types of cancers, leukemia does not fit that bill.
 
Unlike other "solid" cancers that originate in one part of the body, leukemia is often a cancer of the white blood cells that develop in the marrow of bones (although leukemia can form in any of the early blood-forming cells). According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, leukemia can claim a life every 10 minutes.
